These dolls are made from a Japanese clay called La Dolle. This
clay is made from powdered rock and is air dried. Once dry it has the feel
and look of porcelain but can be sanded and trimmed. All of the dolls hair
is raw silk that I hand dyed 3 different colors. The hair is not wigs.
Pieces of hair are glued on bit by bit to get the hairstyle that I want.
Since the hair is silk it can be curled using heat. Each doll is painted
with several coats of acrylic paint mixed with gesso and modeling paste
to give them a hard finish. On the faeries I used a rough sponge to give
the "skin" an unusual texture.
POLLY

Here is the first doll I made. Her name is Polly. She
has glass eyes. Her head, breast plate, hands, and feet are made from a
powdered rock clay with wire "bones". Her body is cloth stuffed with wood
"wool". Her hair is silk that I dyed. Her shoes are leather and she is
wearing a green velvet dress. Underneath she has on a white cotton slip
and pantaloons trimmed in eyelet lace.
